| Description: | The lion dance entered Japan
through China, where it has become a ritualized dance to drive away
evil. The lion dance became known as part of a Noh play entitled
Shakkyo, or Stone Bridge. The reasoning of the red- and white-haired
lion dancers is to represent the red and white peonies. The focal part of the design is the lion face mask, which will be stitched in metal thread. The hair will be done in rows of outline or stem stitch. The costume is very traditional in color and pattern, with one of the jackets done using flat gold. This is the metallic before it is wound around the silk core to produce Japanese gold. Stretcher bars are included in the kit, along with all silk threads. |
